Sweetwater County Historical Society Meeting
"Paper and Pixels: Resources For Local History Research"
by Erin Kinney, Project Director, Wyoming Newspaper Project
2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 11, 2012
Grace Gasson Room, White Mountain Library
2935 Sweetwater Dr., Rock Springs, WY

The Sweetwater County Historical Society (SCHS), a chapter of the Wyoming Historical Society (WSHS), exists to support the preservation and research of local history. It does this through the sponsorship of historical programs and tours for its members, scholarships for history students and support for public historical programs and agencies.

The SCHS holds regular meetings January through March and October through December. The meetings are held on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 2 p.m. and include presentations on historical topics. Social events include a September potluck, December holiday party and annual banquet in April. Historical treks to sites of local or regional interest are offered during the summer.

Each year the SCHS offers a $1,000 scholarship to a student, preferably from Sweetwater County, who is pursing a college degree in history or a related field. The SCHS encourages potential applicants to contact Scholarship Committee Chair Helen Chadey at 362-2823 for more information and application dates.

Anyone interested in state and local history is encouraged to join the SCHS. Benefits include receipt of the "Annals of Wyoming: The Wyoming History Journal" (published quarterly), ten issues of the newsletter "Wyoming History News," and participation in state and local events such as treks and monthly/annual meetings.

Wyoming State Historical Society

The Wyoming State Historical Society (WSHS), an independent, non-profit organization with local chapters across the state and members throughout the U.S. and Europe, promotes the collection and preservation of Wyoming’s history. Since its beginnings in 1953, the Society has also served as a strong advocate for Wyoming’s historical resources.

The WSHS publishes the award winning and prestigious journal, "Annals of Wyoming: The Wyoming History Journal", in cooperation with the History Department and the American Heritage Center at the University of Wyoming and the Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources. The WSHS also publishes a monthly newsletter, "Wyoming History News", for its members and sponsors a publications program to assist authors in publishing their works on Wyoming history.

The WSHS encourages quality teaching of Wyoming history in all schools and since the early 1980s has been a supporter of Wyoming History Day which is administered by the American Heritage Center in cooperation with the WSHS. Other activities advocated by the WSHS include its popular annual trek, which is one of the best ways to get to know Wyoming; supporting historical preservation efforts in Wyoming; and recognizing individuals and organizations for contributions to Wyoming history through a strong annual awards program.

Vital, active, informed chapters are the heart of the Wyoming State Historical Society, and the WSHS actively supports and promotes the efforts of its twenty-one statewide chapters. Most WSHS chapters are organized as county Historical Societies, however in some cases, there may be more than one affiliated chapter in a county. Membership in the Wyoming State Historical Society and its chapters is open to anyone interested in Wyoming and western history.
