A statue in front of the museum honors explorer Major John Wesley Powell, who began his famous expedition down the Grand Canyon at Expedition Island in Green River. Powell lost his right arm due to injuries sustain during the Civil War.

On May 24, 1869, Powell, accompanied by his brother Captain Walter H. Powell and eight other men, set off from Green River in four small boats to explore the Green, Colorado, and Grand Rivers. Powell wrote in his diary "The good people of Green River City, Wyoming, turn out to see us start."

Powell continues "We raise our little flag, push the boats from shore, and the swift current carries us down." Although the nation paid little attention at the time, the Powell Expedition was one of the last and most significant explorations of uncharted, unknown country in American History.
