Part-Time Museum Assistant Job Opening

Position Description

The Museum Assistant, reporting to the Executive Director, is responsible for effectively running the museum’s front end and assisting with all other aspects of the museum as assigned.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities- these duties are illustrative only and are not intended to describe all functions of the job.

  • Responsible for the daily management of the front end when on duty. This includes greeting customers, orienting visitors to the museum and other tourist attractions, answering phones, taking messages, running a cash register, and assisting customers in the gift shop.
  • Assist the Director in ordering, pricing, inventory, and merchandising for the gift shop.
  • Represents and promotes the museum throughout the community in a professional and friendly manner.
  • Assist with record keeping of the museum including filing, photocopying, and data entry.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Ideally, we would like someone who can assist with volunteer coordination as well. These duties would include:

  • Recruits new volunteers for a variety of museum events and projects.
  • Maintains volunteer records.
  • Interviews potential volunteers and may assign projects.
  • Schedules and may lead volunteer meetings and training sessions.
  • Actively participates in event and program planning. May take the lead on some event planning and coordination if appropriate.

 

Required Experience, Traits, and Expertise

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ demonstrable and successful experience in a customer service oriented position (retail, office, etc.). If you do not have paid experience, volunteer, community service, and/or teaching experience will also be considered. 
  • A working knowledge of the history of Sweetwater County, Wyoming, and/or the U.S. West, or the ability and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to plan work assignments, to manage multiple projects, follow directions, and to work well independently as well as in a team.
  • Technical ability sufficient to use word processing, spreadsheet, email, and cash register.
  • Math skills sufficient to count change, count down register, and record cash deposits.
  • Must be punctual, reliable, and flexible.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and professionally with diverse people.
  • The willingness to learn about museums and help with public programs, exhibits, and collections projects as assigned.
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs., bend, stretch, and sit and stand for extended periods of time with reasonable accommodation.
  • The museum staff is comprised of a small team that works very closely together. This position requires personal accountability, a professional manner, respect for co-workers’ time and duties, and dedication to the spirit of public service.

 

Preferred Experience, Traits, and Expertise

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in museum studies, history, education, communications, or a related field.
  • Experience in museums or similar governmental or non-profit organizations.
  • Experience working with volunteers.

 

Compensation and Work Schedule

This position is a part-time, non-benefited position with an hourly wage dependent on experience, minimum $10/hr. Not to exceed 29 hours per week, the schedule usually consists of 5 hour shifts M-F and a full day shift on Saturdays. Saturday availability is required but weekday hours can be flexible if necessary. The position is paid once per month on the 15th after the month worked. The work schedule will be primarily during the museum’s regular business hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the summer. Some hours outside of regular business hours will occasionally be required for events or meetings.
