Coffee with the Curator

Sweetwater County Historical Museum Curator Amanda Benson held two Coffee with the Curator sessions during February 2020. One was held at Coal Train Coffee Depot in Rock Springs and another was held at GET REAL COFFEE in Green River. Partpicipants got to speak with the Curator and ask any questions they had or simply chat. Discussions included what the title "Curator" means, how the museum field prepares for natural disasters, and current museum exhibits. Future Cofffee with the Curators are planned. Preserving Precious Possessions-Preserving Quilts at Home

February 10, 2020

On February 8th 8 people joined  Sweetwater County Historical Museum Curator Amanda Benson when she conducted a seminar on quilt care and preservation, the first in a new series of seminars planned by the museum: Preserving Our Precious Possessions. Benson spent under an hour discussing major threats to quilts and other textiles, and used examples to showcase the best ways to store items. A powerpoint served to show images of topics including common pests, like silverfish and deermice, and examples of light fading. Participants asked many questions from topics like how many quilts could be laid on a bed safely and how to roll quilts.

Upcoming seminars will cover subjects such as the care of photographs, firearms, and family heirlooms. Each seminar will be appoximately an hour long and have opportunities for participants to ask questions about specific examples or anything covered during the seminar. Families attend County Museum Chinese Lunar New Year event​

(Sweetwater County, Wyo. - January 25, 2020)     January 25, 2020 was the official beginning of the Chinese Lunar New Year, and over 30 adults and children from Rock Springs and Green River attended the Sweetwater County Historical Museum’s special event to mark the day.​

Museum Public Engagement Coordinator Aidan Brady showed children, parents, and grandparents how to make their own paper Chinese lanterns to take home, spoke about the importance of the Chinese in Sweetwater County history, and conducted a special tour of the museum.​

Other upcoming museum events include Coffee with the Curator at Coal Train Coffee Depot in Rock Springs on Saturday, February 1, and Get Real Coffee in Green River on Saturday, February 8, plus a day of Map Reading and Back Country Navigation training at Sweetwater County Fire District #1 headquarters in Rock Springs on Saturday, February 15. ​

GRHS STUDENTS TOUR COUNTY MUSEUM

Public Engagement Coordinator Aidan Brady, shown here, provided a group of Green River High School students with a special tour of the Sweetwater County Historical Museum on Tuesday.

The museum’s gallery includes exhibits on pre-historic peoples, the mountain men, immigrants, the railroad, coal and trona mining, the Lincoln Highway, the Chinese in Rock Springs, ranching, John Wesley Powell, and a special Christmas exhibit museum staff prepared last month. You can learn more about scheduling a tour for your group under the "Learn" tab.

The museum is located at 3 East Flaming Gorge Way in Green River. Winter hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and admission is free.
