Winter Wonderland Open House December 14, 2019

Winter Wonderland Crafts

Nearly 20 people joined us on December 14 and chose from a series of fun and whimsical snow themed crafts! The free event ran from 10 AM until 4 PM. All supplies were provided and all ages were welcome. A powerpoint discussing the history of snowmen and winter in sweetwater county was on loop during the event. Cookies from Daily Knead, hot chocolate, and cider were served during the event. Guests also explored our gallery and some of the great items for sale in our bookstore! 

Crafts included:

Snowman Snowflake-a fun snowflake made of snowpeople!

Sled bookmark-Add a wintery flair to any reading adventure!

Snowman magnet-This fun magnet isn't complete without a stovepipe hat!

COUNTY MUSEUM HOSTING SPECIAL CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT CRAFT-MAKING EVENT

The Sweetwater County Historical Museum hosted a special Christmas craft event on November 30 at the museum in Green River. 

38 Adults as well as children took part in "Make-and-take an ornament." Participants created their own vintage Christmas tree ornaments, one for our tree and one which they took home with them for their own trees.

Assisted by museum staff, participants made ornament-size paper wreaths, cinnamon ribbons, pine cone Christmas trees, Godseyes, and Victorian-era paper cone ornaments called “Tussie Mussies.” The fully decorated tree will be up until the entire christmas exhibit is taken down next year, so make sure to come take a look!

A group of Green River Girl Scouts earning their merit badges for Celebrating Community visited the Sweetwater County Historical Museum  for a special tour.

Museum Public Engagement Coordinator Aidan Brady led the tour, and the Scouts, members of Troop 1998, learned about a wide range of Sweetwater County history, including pre-history, the earliest human inhabitants, Native Americans, mountain men and the fur industry, frontier-era immigrants, the railroad, the Lincoln Highway, mining and agriculture in Sweetwater County, the Chinese Massacre tragedy, and the John Wesley Powell expeditions of 1869 and 1871.

The museum is happy to conduct group tours and would like to do more. We ask only that you contact us in advance so that we can schedule your tour properly. We are also always looking for more volunteers. In May of each year, the museum hosts the “3rd Grade History Fair” for third graders from all over Sweetwater County. Students attending participate in special activities and learn about Sweetwater County History.
